Duties & Responsibilities - Contract Instructor

PREFACE:  The duties and responsibilities listed within this page are recommendations for the successful development and implementation of a Target Learning Corp. (TLC) program.  Any individual hired by TLC as an Instructor or Representative would be considered an "Independent Contractor".  As an Independent Contractor, you would be responsible for the successful completion of the contract assignment offered by TLC - the manner in which that assignment is completed is at your discretion.  Naturally, to preserve the integrity of TLC and its programs, we are seeking individuals interested in applying the strategies and methods that have worked well for TLC for more than ten years.  Individuals who do not perform according to the high professional and ethical standards of TLC will not be offered additional contract assignments.

BEFORE THE SEMINARRegistration & Logistics

Registration Process

Client Registration

When a client agrees to a TLC seminar we will create a Seminar Agreement listing the seminar objectives, dates, times, location and any special considerations expressed by the client.

Billing

Employer-sponsored seminars generally prefer direct billing. Once the seminar is completed TLC will send an invoice detailing what the client received.  Although some clients request special consideration, the TLC Contract (and Invoice) normally requires a 20% deposit two weeks before the first class day, and final payment within 15 business days from the last class day.

Target Learning Instructors will receive payment for their services within one week of the final class day.

Logistics

Travel Plans

Instructors will be responsible for their own travel expenses to and from the seminar site (which are tax-deductible).

Participant Materials

At least one week before the first scheduled class day, instructors will be shipped the appropriate number of participant binders (based on anticipated class size). While the seminar is in progress every effort will be made by TLC to supply additional or replacement materials as needed.  The cost for participant binders and shipping costs will be paid by TLC.

Customer Service

Representatives, instructors and seminar participants will have full access to our staff through our toll-free telephone number. This number can be used to solve registration, scheduling and billing issues. Participants will also be able to contact TLC regarding instructor issues. Naturally, we prefer that our instructors handle any challenging situations on their own.  We will continue to support our instructors if they are operating within TLC guidelines, but we also must provide the best customer service possible to our paying clients. Of course, disruptive or unhappy participants (or clients) should be referred directly to TLC so that our instructors can focus on effectively teaching our programs.

Online Learning Styles Assessments

The Program Representative and/or instructor will be responsible for obtaining an e-mail address for each registered seminar participant (usually provided by the client).  TLC will give each participant online access to our Learning Styles Assessment.  Ideally, the participants will complete the assessment before the first class day - allowing the instructor to adjust (or add) seminar components to meet the objectives of the participants.

TLC will send the instructor an online styles assessment results page for each seminar participant.

BEFORE THE SEMINARPreparation

Classroom Set-Up

We recommend the instructor arrive at the seminar location at least 40 minutes before the start of the seminar.  Some participants invariably show up early with questions about the program or just curious about the instructor's views on various educational issues (a "pick the expert's brain" session).

We also recommend the instructor have all seminar materials, classroom seating and technical items set up 15 minutes before the seminar is scheduled to start.  Not only does this convey the professionalism expected of a TLC Contract Instructor, it allows time for mental preparation to ensure a relaxed presentation.

Understand Objectives

TLC Program Objectives

First and foremost, TLC objectives are subordinate to the client and participants' objectives.  At times, the objectives of the client and its employees are not identical.  It is the instructor's responsibility to ensure both parties are satisfied with the seminar.

Client Training Objectives

Before the seminar even begins the client's training objectives will be established and listed in the Seminar Agreement.  However, it is possible the client may alter their objectives shortly before the first class day.  In such a case it is the Instructor's responsibility to make the necessary adjustments to his or her seminar ouTLCne and presentation timetable.  If the client's alterations are extensive TLC may adjust the seminar rate to compensate the instructor accordingly

DURING THE SEMINARDelivery

Classroom Set-Up

Confirm Seminar Objectives

It is recommended that a flipchart or whiteboard be used to list the seminar objectives in large letters for the class to see.  As the participants introduce themselves to the class have each one describe their professional and personal seminar objectives - or, have them record their objectives on a piece of paper and collect the papers immediately.

On the flipchart or whiteboard, record any additional objectives not already listed, and briefly discuss how all the objectives can benefit every participant to some degree.

TL Advisor Program

The instructor must remind the participants that they will have online access to a TLC Instructor for six months following the seminar.

Seminar Etiquette

Answering Participant Questions

A TLC Instructor is encouraged to answer any and all questions regardless of the order in which they are asked.  He or she should never respond to a participant's question with, "I will cover that point later in the seminar."  If the participants ask a question it is because they are curious about the answer now, not later.  The instructor must provide a reasonable answer at the moment of the question and follow-up the answer in more detail when the point is scheduled to be discussed.

Late Arrivals, Early Departures

Employer-sponsored seminars are normally conducted during business hours.  Therefore, it is possible that some participants may arrive late and/or leave early.  It is the instructor's responsibility to ensure every paid participant receives the seminar materials, and if necessary the additional instruction, to accomplish the training objectives ouTLCned by the client.

AFTER THE SEMINAREvaluation

Seminar Conclusion

Objectives Review

At the end of the seminar retrieve the flipchart or whiteboard and ask the participants if all the seminar objectives have been achieved. The instructor can refer to the TL Advisor Program if any participants would like additional instruction.

Objectives Review

The instructor should ensure all participants complete the TLC Program Evaluation form before they leave the classroom - even if the client has an internal evaluation form used by their training department.  If a reading improvement seminar was provided the instructor should have recorded the beginning and ending reading scores from each participant.

Seminar Follow-Up

Paperwork Submittal to TLC

Once the seminar is completed the instructor must submit to TLC Operations within one week:

1.  Participant seminar evaluation forms (completed)
2.  Extra participant binders
3.  Any documentation provided by the client at the seminar site
4.  Any payment information provided by participants or the client

TL Advisor Program

This program allows each paid seminar participant full online access to a TLC Instructor (a.k.a. "Advisor") for six months following the final class day. Most participants use this access to gain further clarification on specific seminar topics, or for help in applying our techniques in a particular work or school situation (that was not covered during the actual seminar). At this time, TLC staff handles all online inquiries through this program but consultants have the option to assume the role of TLC Advisor - if a contract instructor chooses this option, he or she will receive a $25 bonus.
