HOW WE LISTEN

 
2.1 
Recognizing Your Speaker’s Style

This page will show participants how to recognize and understand their speaker’s learning and thinking style to ensure the listener is on “the same page” as the speaker.

Group Activity

In small groups, participants will list (on a Target Learning worksheet) various speaking & listening characteristics of people they have known in the past.

 

Purpose

To broaden each participant’s perspective regarding speaking styles and characteristics.

 
2.2 
Consequences of Poor Listening Skills

This page will explain how poor listening skills can cause stress, waste time, and cost money.  Specifically, it will cover the following consequences:

●  Misinterpretation & Misrepresentation
●  Ineffective Customer Service
●  Damage to Business Relationships
●  Legal Repercussions

Group Activity

Participants will engage in an activity that involves the transfer of information from one source to another.

 

Purpose

To demonstrate how quickly (and easily) information can be misinterpreted – despite the best intentions.

  Situational Listening Mistakes

This page will describe how common listening mistakes can affect an individual’s comprehension and retention during:

●  Meetings & Training Sessions
●  Face-to-Face Conversations
●  Telephone Conversations
●  Attempts at Conflict Resolution
●  Team-Building Efforts

Class Activity

Participants of Group A will present a mock meeting.  Group B will attend the meeting and later summarize the content. Group C will observe both groups and report its findings.

 

Purpose

To demonstrate the numerous small (but detrimental) listening mistakes that can occur during routine business activities.

HOW TO LISTEN, LEARN & REMEMBER

 
3.1  Got Structure?

This page will describe how important mental and physical structure is in the listening process.

Class Activity

Participants will be given 45 seconds to memorize 18 random digits.  Then they will receive instruction on how to structure those digits for easy comprehension and retention.

 

Purpose

To demonstrate the unique thought process used by each participant and how structure can assist the listening process.

 
3-2  TLC Listening Process

This page will provide a step-by-step process for effective listening in all business environments and during all business activities.

Individual Activity

Participants will have the option to personalize the step-by-step process to fit their preferred learning style and their current job duties.

 

Purpose

To show participants how easy it is to customize the process, and how a structured format can ensure productive listening.

 Note-Taking for Meetings, Conversations and Training Sessions

This page (along with TLC worksheets and templates) will show participants how to use their personal learning and thinking style to efficiently and effectively record (and apply) relevant information.

 


SECTION 4
- PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER


4.1  Adapting Your Listening Style

This page will provide strategies for adjusting your listening style to accommodate difficult (or hostile) speakers.

Group Activity

In groups of three (using a TL or client-related situation): Participant A will portray an angry customer. Participant B will represent an employee attempting to resolve the problem.  Participant C will observe the interaction and record the listening process steps used by Participant B.

 

Purpose

To demonstrate the flexibility of the TL Listening Process under stressful conditions.

 
4.2  Group Listening

This page will show participants how to listen and respond effectively during group conversations (i.e. team meetings, conference calls, etc.).

Group Activity

In groups of five, participants will discuss a work-related topic.  One participant in each group will serve as an observer and record how each person listens and responds to one another.

 

Purpose

To show each participant how their language (verbal and non-verbal) can affect the outcome of group discussions.

This page provides a comprehensive summary of all the listening strategies segmented by learning and thinking styles.  It serves as an excellent quick reference guide for participants after the seminar.

5.1  Program Worksheets & Templates

This subsection contains pre-formatted worksheets that will help participants apply the various learning strategies during and after the seminar.  Participants will have the option to receive extra worksheets after the seminar (at no extra charge), or create variations of the worksheets to fit their personal thinking style (using our templates in MS Word).
 

5.2  Online Resources for Future Study

Participants will receive a list of recommended web sites to help them explore listening strategies, learning theory, adult learning and learning styles more extensively.
