SECTION 1
HOW WE THINK

1.1
  Learning Style Indicator

This learning styles survey will help participants discover their strongest method for receiving information.  For a description of learning styles, click here

1.2
  Thinking Style Indicator

This thinking styles survey will help participants discover their strongest method for processing information.  For a description of thinking styles, click here.

1.3
  Reading Skill Indicator

This survey will help participants assess their current reading strengths and weaknesses.

1.4
  Assessment Results Page

On this page participants will be able to record their results from all the assessments.

1.5
Definition of Learning & Thinking Styles

A clear description of each type of learning and thinking style will be provided, along with a summary of how we receive information through reading and listening.

SECTION 2 - READING IN THE FAST LANE

2.1
Breaking the Speed Barrier

This page describes the causes of slow reading, and why fast readers are able to read in excess of 600 words per minute with excellent comprehension.

2.2
Phrasing Stages

This page explains (using a step by step formula) the actual process necessary to rapidly accelerate one's reading speed up to 1000 words per minute.  Although participants will increase their reading speed during the seminar, the same process can be applied after the seminar to ensure mastery of their new skill.

Individual Activity

Participants begin an eye movement exercise called Stage 1.

Purpose

To ensure each participant applies the reading strategy properly.

2.3  Hyper-Reading

Essentially, this is graduate school for fast readers.  Participants will learn how to read and research reading materials in excess of 3000 words per minute.  Some comprehension will be lost but this reading method allows participants to capture the information they need when facing strict deadlines.

Class Activity

Participants apply Hyper-Reading method to their reading material.

Purpose

To demonstrate the feasibility of reading fast while retaining comprehension.

SECTION 3 - COMPREHENSION, RETENTION & RECALL

3.1The Key Elements

This provides a description of the elements that exist in every written document.

Individual Activity

Participants locate key elements in their own work-related materials.

Purpose

To find key information in complex or poorly written materials.

3.2  Got Structure?

This page provides examples of common errors adults make when preparing to read work-related documents.

Individual Activity

Participants structure a future reading assignment from their own work material.

Purpose

To demonstrate the need for mental & physical structure while reading.

3.3  The Survey Process - Part 1

This begins a step by step process for ensuring excellent comprehension when reading long, complex and even poorly written materials.

Class Activity

Participants survey a long report & book provided by the instructor.

Purpose

To break down volumes of data for fast and easy reference.

3.4  The Survey Process - Part 2

The second part focuses on reading chapters and short reports that require in-depth analysis and/or comprehensive summaries.

Individual Activity

Participants survey a chapter or short report used in their own work material.

Purpose

To efficiently coordinate information for a specific reading goal.

3.5  Advanced Comprehension Strategies

This page provides several advanced strategies to keep a reader focused and searching for the correct information.  These strategies are particularly useful when reading complex or boring materials.

Individual Activity

Participants apply various strategies to current work-related readings.

Purpose

To help participants find which strategy fits their personal thinking style.

3.6  Classic Note-Taking

This page provides a sample of three effective note-taking methods that can be used individually or in combination.  The different methods also can be tailored to fit the reading material and the reader's preferred learning style.

3.7
Notable Techniques

The techniques listed on this page are designed for efficient note-taking during meetings and while reading quickly.

SECTION 4
- PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

4.1 Critical Reading

This page provides examples on how to read all types of materials from a critical perspective.  Too often we accept written materials as factual because the author has the expected credentials.  As a result, the information we gather can be bias or inaccurate, which can prove damaging if applied in the workplace.

Individual Activity

Participants select a distant memory and use each of their senses to recall more details about the memory.

Purpose

To demonstrate how vivid memories can be if numerous senses are incorporated

4.2  Reading Time Management

Most adult readers simply pick up their reading material and read until they are finished, or until they run out of time.  As a result, they don't read efficiently.  This page provides a step-by-step process for managing short and long reading assignments.

Individual Activity

Participants will select one step in the process and apply if to their work-related reading material.

Purpose

To demonstrate how a reading assignment can be completed efficiently and effectively.

4.3  Target Reading Checklist

This page provides a step-by-step process for incorporating all the reading strategies covered earlier in the seminar.  The clearly defined steps will help linear thinkers stay on track, while global thinkers have the opportunity to tailor the contents and steps to match their particular style.

Indvidual Activity

Participants will select one step in the process and apply it to their work-related material.

Purpose

To demonstrate how just one step in the process will improve their reading skill.

SECTION 5 - APPENDIX
