Do you count the number of pages to read…then silently grumble about the teacher who assigned all those pages? Do you look to see how many pictures and graphs are in the chapter, because that means fewer words on a page?If so, you have already made academic reading more difficult. Instead of looking for key information that might be on a future test (or helpful for a research paper), you tend to approach the reading as a chore - something to get out of the way. This is called passive reading and it always leads to daydreaming, re-reading, and what we call "page amnesia" (reading an entire page then instantly forget what you just read). Passive reading is not efficient or effective. In this seminar, we will show you how to efficiently and effectively read complex (and boring) academic material through a variety of flexible techniques that conform to your preferred thinking style. By the end of this seminar you will be able to: ● Read faster with better comprehension, retention and recall ● Improve your concentration while reading (avoid daydreaming & re-reading) ● Take concise and useful notes while reading ● Find the type of information that will be on tests (even if the teacher doesn't tell you) ● Shorten overall amount of time required to complete a reading assignment ● Read all types of information with critical perspective ● Quickly and accurately find key information in all types of materials |
| How much practice is involved? | | This is not a "give me some handouts and I'm out of here" course. You will practice the primary reading technique for 10 minutes of each 50-minute class session. The remainder of each session will involve hands-on activities that will improve your reading and thinking skills - which includes memory improvement.
NOTE: Though it's not required, many students have continued to practice the techniques outside the classroom and have achieved extraordinary results in a short period of time. |
| Where will this seminar take place? | | All seminar sessions take place at your school and are scheduled to coincide with your normal course times. Class size for each session will be limited to 10, but several sessions will be offered throughout the day and evening to accommodate your individual schedule.
The 5-hour seminar will run for one week with one-hour (or 50-minute) sessions meeting every day (Monday through Friday); the 10-hour seminar will run for two weeks. Variations of this schedule are possible based on student interest - see Differences. |
| What is the difference between the (5 & 10-Hour) seminar formats? | | The short format (5 hours) will include the majority of our reading techniques, but the practice time will be limited. The long format (10 hours) will include every element of our program, plus allow for extensive practice of the techniques during each class (on your own homework).
|
| What do I need to bring to this seminar? | | You should bring only your current homework assignments since you will be applying the reading strategies directly to these assignments.
At the start of the seminar you will receive a TLC Student Binder which contains:
● All reading strategies ● Step-by-step guidelines for implementing the strategies ● Templates for note-taking ● Templates for time management & organization ● Color-coded dividers for easy reference |
| Do you offer scholarships? | | Yes, for every 10 paid enrollments we provide one full scholarship (1 free enrollment), or 2 partial scholarships (2 half-price enrollments). Normally, your school will decide which students receive the scholarships (based on financial need).
