What is the very first thing you do when you have a reading assignment in a school textbook? Do you count the number of pages to read…then silently grumble about the teacher who assigned all those pages? Do you look to see how many pictures and graphs are in the chapter, because that means fewer words on a page?

If so, you have already made academic reading more difficult. Instead of looking for key information that might be on a future test (or helpful for a research paper), you tend to approach the reading as a chore - something to get out of the way. This is called passive reading and it always leads to daydreaming, re-reading, and what we call "page amnesia" (reading an entire page then instantly forget what you just read). Passive reading is not efficient or effective.

In this program, we will show you how to efficiently and effectively read complex (and boring) academic material through a variety of flexible techniques that conform to your preferred thinking style. By the end of this program you will be able to:

Read faster with better comprehension, retention and recall
Improve your concentration while reading (avoid daydreaming & re-reading)
Take concise and useful notes while reading
Find the type of information that will be on tests (even if the teacher doesn't tell you)
Shorten overall amount of time required to complete a reading assignment
Read all types of information with critical perspective
Quickly and accurately find key information in all types of materials

You will learn how to apply a variety of flexible (and proven) reading strategies using your own preferred learning style.

To ensure you benefit immediately, we will show you (during the class sessions) how to apply our strategies in your current textbooks. That’s right, you will actually be getting homework done during this program. Equally important, you will be learning how to master the reading strategies in material that is relevant to you.

Reading Scores From Past Students

This is not a "give me some handouts and I'm out of here" course. You will practice the primary reading technique for 10 minutes of each 50-minute class session. The remainder of each session will involve hands-on activities that will improve your reading and thinking skills - which includes memory improvement.

NOTE: Though it's not required, many students have continued to practice the techniques outside the classroom and have achieved extraordinary results in a short period of time.

All class sessions will take place at your school, and can be scheduled to coincide with your normal course times. Class size for each session will be limited to 10, but several sessions will be offered throughout the day and evening to accommodate your individual schedule.

Typically, the 10-hour program will run for two weeks with one-hour (or 50-minute) sessions meeting every day (Monday through Friday); the 15-hour program will run for three weeks, and the 20-hour program will run for four weeks.

Variations of this schedule are possible based on student interest.

The short format (5 hours) will include the majority of our reading techniques, but the practice time will be limited. The long format (10 hours) will include every element of our program, plus allow for extensive practice of the techniques during each class (on your own homework).

We recognize that you have a full schedule while in school, so we have structured this program to meet your particular needs. For an example, visit our page called "Frequently Asked Questions by Students".

You should bring only your current homework assignments since you will be applying the reading strategies directly to these assignments.

At the start of the program you will receive a TL Student Workbook which contains:

  All reading strategies
Step-by-step guidelines for implementing the strategies
  Templates for note-taking
Templates for time management & organization
  Color-coded dividers for easy reference

Yes, for every 10 paid enrollments we provide one full scholarship (1 free enrollment) or 2 partial scholarships (2 half-price enrollments). Typically, your school will decide which students receive the scholarships (based on financial need).

There are three ways for a program to be set up at your school.

OPTION 1

If one of your school administrators requests this program be offered at your school, we will select specific dates for this program with your school administration.  Once we have the dates, and classroom space, we will make online and print registration forms available to anyone interested in enrolling.

If you are a school administrator, please click here for more information about our programs.

OPTION 2

If you would like us to offer this program at your school, you can complete our Program Request Form (we will not give or sell your information to anyone else).  If we receive enough interest at your school, we will contact your school administration and attempt to arrange program dates based on the preferences listed by you and others at your school.

We do need a minimum of 20 paid registrations to run this program so if you have any friends and classmates who are interested in this program, we recommend they also complete the request form.

If you would like to increase the chances of this program running at your school, and possibly receive a free enrollment, you should also visit www.targetlearning.net/schools-jobs.html.

OPTION 3

If you belong to a school club, association, fraternity, sorority, or athletic team and already have 20 members whom are interested in this program, we can set up a program and dates almost immediately.  Please go to www.targetlearning.net/schools-groups.html for more information.
